The Earliest History Of Eyelash Extensions

Enhancing your beauty with the use of maximizing your eyelashes  is not a new concept. In fact, it can be dated back to as far as the 1800s as seen on books and other literary documentation. Some of the methods reported include cutting the edge of the lashes. Others even use pomade or walnut leaves mixtures.

It was in the year 1882 when it was reported in Paris that ladies sew hair to the eyelids to create longer lashes. This was also reported by the Scottish Press in the year 1899.

Eyelash Extensions in the 20th Century

It was in 1902 when Karl Nessler, a famous hair stylist, patented the method of weaving artificial brows and lashes. He began selling false lashes in his London salon the year after. Canadian Anna Taylor owned the patent for false eyelashes in the United States in 1911.

In 1916, Intolerance movie director D.W. Griffith had false lashes made from human hair attached to actress Sheena Wong to emphasize her eyes.

Improved techniques of false lashes grew in the 1930s and become popular again in the 1960’s. Fringe base falsies gave birth to more advanced designs in lashes like cluster lashes which can be used to thicken specific areas of one’s lashes. Brash and bold lashes were one of the beauty trends in the 1960’s

Eyelash Extensions in the 21st Century

Modern eyelash extensions are composed of single hairs attached to your existing eyelashes with a medical grade adhesive. These eyelash extensions come in a wide variety of styles, colors, and materials. Materials include human hair, synthetic silk, polyester, and Siberian mink fur. Modern lashes are lightweight, comfortable, and far superior to the older methods you’ve seen in the past.

Methods for eyelash extensions have become more advanced at the start of the 21st century. Gone were the the days of obvious fake lashes. Eyelash extensions have become more and more authentic looking. Widespread use of extensions started in 2004. It’s popularity was due to the fact that many celebrities opted to get eyelash extensions too. Modern extensions are made of single hair attached to existing eyelashes with the use of medical grade adhesives. False eyelashes come in all styles, materials and even colors. You may choose materials like human hair, mink fur, synthetic silk and even polyester. These lashes are comfortable and lightweight eliminating the discomfort that older methods of eyelash extensions have.

As you can see eyelash extensions have an interesting history. It is one of ever improving techniques. From the earlier methods using very primitive design, to the more effective but still somewhat fake looking lashes of the 1960s, to the lightweight and stylish eyelashes of the 21st century. It is a very important part of the fashion industry and one that continues to evolve and grow in popularity.
