Whether you are in your 20’s, 30’s or 50’s, you probably already have researched on how to reduce wrinkles or any signs of skin aging. These fine lines, laugh lines, or whatever you want to call it, is part of the aging process. Whether we like it or not, our skin will reach this natural phase, but there are ways on how we can slow down this process while keeping the skin healthy and glowing.

Here are some tips on how we can protect and reduce those unwanted lines on our skin:

Avoid the sun as much as possible. Too much exposure to the sun breaks down skin’s collagen and elastin and causes hyperpigmentation (freckles and dark spots). Make it a habit to apply moisturizer with SPF protection to any exposed skin when going out. Apply moisturizer even on cloudy days, because UV is still present on days when the sun is not visible.

Or you can always use an umbrella, hat, and sunglasses to minimize sun exposure.

Stop smoking. Smoke also contains enzymes that break down two on the most important components of the skin: collagen and elastin. When smoke is inhaled, it reduces blood flow and its ability to distribute oxygen to the skin. When exhaled, the skin is exposed to chemicals and carcinogens that causes the skin cells to break down.

Facial expressions. As we age, our skin slowly loses its elasticity which is the primary cause of having wrinkles. Practice daily skin care routine at home or get anti-aging treatments if you can afford to do so.

Get adequate sleep. Sleep more and it will help the skin remain thick and more elastic. While you’re at it, sleep on your back to avoid sleep lines which may cause wrinkles on the cheeks and chin.

Watch your diet. Eat food rich in protein and fatty acids (omega 3). Essential fatty acids help keep the skin plump and youthful. Eat more fruits and vegetables as well.

Coffee. There is a long-standing debate about the benefits of coffee, caffeine in general. Some say that it is good for the skin, but some will argue that it has its fair share of negative effects. Studies show that coffee is loaded with antioxidants that helps reduce the number of free radicals in our bodies. But too much intake can also lead to dehydration. So, keep your daily caffeine intake in moderation. Too much of anything is still bad for your health.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Keep your skin hydrated. Apply moisturizer while the skin is damp to really block in hydration. Make sure that you use the right products for your skin type.

Consult your dermatologist. Schedule regular appointments with your doctor to make sure that you’re taking care of your skin the right way. Ask for expert advice for any irregularities on your skin.
